Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

What are Bio-identical Hormones?
Hormones that are bio-identical have a molecular structure that is the same as hormones produced in the human body. The term “bio-identical” refers to the chemical structure and not the source of the hormone.  When used as a form of hormone replacement therapy for menopause, a woman’s body cannot distinguish between hormones that are bio-identical and hormones it produces itself as they both produce the same physiological responses.  Because of this, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, or BHRT; is sometimes called NHRT (Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy).

Hormones that are bio-identical are made from various combinations of compounds extracted from plants including:
Wild Yams
Peanut oil and other types of beans

The Difference between Bio-identical and Synthetic Hormones
Synthetic hormones, unlike hormones that are bio-identical, are manufactured and patented by pharmaceutical companies. Bio-identical hormones are usually designed specifically for each individual patient and, therefore, must be made by a compounding pharmacy. Bio-identical hormones cannot be patented by pharmaceutical companies.

The molecular structure of synthetic hormones differs from those produced by the human body, and hormones that are bio-identical.  Most synthetic hormones are produced using a mixture of progestin and the urine from pregnant mares.  Although horse urine is a natural substance, it is not natural to humans.  It has been shown to contain more than 200 different complex substances related to estrogen, which according to the Greenspan Good Health Center, is believed to be much more than the human body needs or is able to tolerate.  When bio-identical hormones are taken, the body treats them as hormones it made itself, and eliminates any extra.  The human body has a more difficult time using and eliminating synthetic hormones, and if they stay in the body too long, they may cause over stimulation of certain organs and hormonal imbalances.

Bio-identical HRT for Menopause and Perimenopause
Approximately 70-80% of women experience at least some of the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. For many women the symptoms begin in their early 40s while they are still having their periods, due to fluctuating hormonal levels (perimenopause).   A large number of women continue to experience the unpleasant symptoms throughout their menopausal years, which generally last until a woman is in her mid 50s. There are more than 35 symptoms of menopause.

The most common symptoms include:
Hot flashes or a flushed feeling
Cold flashes
Night sweats
Vaginal dryness
Decreased libido
Irregular periods
Mood swings or uncontrolled sudden crying or anxiety
Sleep disturbances
Weight gain or a bloated feeling

Hormones such as Progesterone, Estrogen (Estriol, Estrone and Estradiol), Testosterone, DHEA, Pregnenolone, Melatonin, Desiccated Thyroid Extract, T3 & T4 are common to BHRT.  Quantities are varied according to each patient’s individual needs.  BHRT can be taken orally, topically or vaginally and comes in various options including transdermal (creams, gels), oral (capsules) and Buccal (Troches, Sublingual drops).

Compound Care’s specially trained professionals work with patients and their physicians to develop the “right” customized medication and dose for each individual.
