Sports Medicine

More and more athletic trainers and physicians are turning towards compounding pharmacies to formulate customized medications for athletes incurring sports related injuries.  This includes athletes of every type, whether professional, amateur or an exercise junky, suffering from acute or chronic injuries resulting from repetitive sports.

Based on a prescribers order, Compound Care Pharmacy customizes medications to meet the specific needs associated with injuries related to participating in sports and/or exercise.

Topical compounded medications have been shown to help relieve the pain and inflammation associated with overuse injuries such as runners knee and tennis elbow; as well as sprains, strains, tendonitis, bursitis and post surgical procedures.  Common oral medications that relieve pain and inflammation are often associated with troublesome side effects such as gastrointestinal upset, drowsiness, constipation and nausea; which can be detrimental to athletic performance.  The ability to administer agents in a topical preparation can enhance the therapeutic benefit while significantly reducing the risk of adverse effects.

Research has shown that topically applied ketoprofen provides a high local concentration of drug below the site of application but decreases systemic exposure and significantly reduces the risk of gastrointestinal upset or bleeding.  When properly compounded into an appropriate base, tissue concentrations of ketoprofen were found to be 100-fold greater below the application site (knee) compared to systemic concentrations.*  Muscle relaxants can be similarly prepared to minimize the risk of drowsiness.

Products that are available commercially are limited in dosage strengths and forms.  Compounded products offer physicians and trainers the ability to customize medications based on appropriate dosage strengths, potency and delivery methods; while reducing unwanted side effects.
